Castle Rock at Sunrise
Reference: DE5
Location: Valley of Rocks
Gallery: Devon,
Castle Rock is the imposing nearest peak guarding the mouth of the valley which is a dry river that runs parallel to the coast. One explanation for this strange geological occurrence is that cliff erosion at Lynmouth allowed the waters of the East & West Lyn to flow out to sea there leaving the Valley of Rocks high & dry. Legends say that the valley was the location of the devil’s castle and while he was away his wives took part in a drunken orgy with a neighbour. On finding out what had happened he turned the women into the turrets of rock seen here and destroyed the castle.
